Pigmentation (Age spots, brown spots)

Pigmentation (Age spots, brown spots) Overview

Age spots or lentigos, sometimes known as `liver spots` are medically known under the condition of hyperpigmentation.

Hyperpigmentation manifests as brownish patches that appear on the skin as a person ages, due to either sun damage or genetics (e.g. larger birthmarks). These benign patches resemble large freckles and usually appear on the face, neck, hands, feet or legs.

Although they are not harmful, many people wish to have them removed for cosmetic reasons. Professional skincare clinics have effective treatments to reduce the appearance of more pronounced age spots or hyperpigmentation.

A daily use of a broad-spectrum (covering a wide range of wavelengths) UVA and UVB sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30, as the most effective way to protect the skin from future sun damage (photodamage).
